Tom Slick Park- 3 Paws up

Tom Slick Park: 7400 Hwy 151, San Antonio, TX 78227

Located off Highways 151 and 410, Tom Slick Park is a great area for some family fun. A basketball court, a playground and lots of open fields for various activities sits on the park’s 1.5 acres. There are two areas you and your furry friend can enjoy: the dog park, or the walking trails, which has access to a huge pond.

The trails and the pond are really fun for your more athletically-inclined dogs. The entirety of the park’s trails measures out to 1.2 miles in a figure-eight layout, but Sully and I think the best section is the .5 mile loop around the pond. The trail is paved making it easy for running or biking. The arboreal flora is thick, which makes you feel like you’ve stepped out of the city and into a secluded forest. The pond is in the middle of this area, and is home to an iron statue of “Nessie” (the Loch Ness Monster) poking her head out of the water. Due to the slanted terrain, the pond has a beach-like entrance making it easy for dogs to enter. Take a ball or a stick for some fetching fun. And don’t forget to bring a towel!

If your dog is not a runner or a swimmer, then check out the gated dog park! The park is divided into two areas – one for small dogs and one for larger dogs. Both sides of the park are pretty small, which knocks off one paw on my rating scale, but the large dog side has some cool amenities. Small agility equipment is scattered around the grass. Not only are these structures fun for your dog to play on, but it also breaks up the landscape, which can help slow down those crazy dog zoomies! My favorite piece of agility equipment is the see-saw (although Sully has different opinions). Just keep in mind that you’re not out here to start your dog’s agility career – he wants to run around and meet new friends!

Sadly, the small dog area only has two small agility pieces, compared with the seven that the large side has. They both have a seating area but remember: I don’t recommend parking your butt while your furry friend mingles. Both sides of the dog park also include a stand providing poop bags and a trash can, a watering station for dogs (and people!), and double gated entrances for safe coming and going. I’ve also been told that they have a good doggy shower but I haven’t seen it.

All in all, I like this park and its amenities. But because of the small size of the dog park, I urge you to be a little more cautious. This park has a reputation for getting busy and in a small area, you can’t separate yourself if trouble should arise.

Sully and I give this park 3 out of 4 paws up!

Have you been to Tom Slick Park? Did you and your pup love it, or are there some improvements that could be made? Let me know what you liked or didn’t like about it!
